ইট পাথরের তৈরি সুউচ্চ ভবনের মাঝে যেন এই শহরের আকাশও লুকিয়ে গেছে। শহরের বাতাস হয়েছে ভারী। গগনচুম্বী এসব ভবন যেন এখন শহরের শোভা। মানুষের আভিজাত্য প্রকাশ পায় বাড়ির সৌন্দর্য্য আর বিলাসিতায়। তবে জানেন কি, এমন একটি শহর রয়েছে যেখানে বাড়ি তৈরি হয় মাটি দিয়ে। এমনকি বহুতল ভবনও মাটি দিয়েই তৈরি।
আমাদের দেশের বিভিন্ন অঞ্চলে মাটির তৈরি বাড়ি চোখে পরে। যা শত শত বছর ধরে সে অঞ্চলের ঐতিহ্য বহন করছে। যদিও এখন তেমন একটা মাটির বাড়ি দেখা যায় না। সেখানে স্থান নিয়েছে ইট পাথরের বাড়ি।
তবে ইয়েমেনের পূর্বাঞ্চলে অবস্থিত হাদরামাউত উপত্যকার এক বিস্ময়কর শহর শিবাম। এটি বিশ্বের অন্যতম প্রাচীন উঁচু ভবনের নগরী, যেখানে সমস্ত বহুতল ভবন কাঁচা মাটি দিয়ে তৈরি।
