Niue is a small island country in the South Pacific Ocean. It is a part of Polynesia. Not many people know about Niue and very few people visit it every year. We are both zoologists, so Niue was particularly interesting for us and we visited it in 2025. Firstly, Niue is home to an endemic sea snake species — the Flat-tail sea snake (Laticauda schistorhyncha). Locals call it Katuali. Sea snakes are very abundant in Niue. They are deadly venomous, but not aggressive towards people. The main target species for us in Niue was not a snake. The Humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) is the main star here! These gentle giants come to rest, mate and give birth in warm waters around the island every year for several months. This country is one of the few which allows people to swim with whales. Spending some time with Humpback whales in their habitat was magnificent! This was definitely one of the most amazing wildlife encounters we ever had.
