Decollage

Cutting away from a known familiar place, leaving a structure for a new landscape. Something solid
becomes layers of air and action. The walls of the room are now windows to see the sky. The lines
that were once walls reach into the air and we walk around them.

In Tess Giberson's Spring 2012 Collection DÉCOLLAGE, garments are cut into, bleached out, taken
to their essential qualities: to see what is left behind through an unraveling of material and form. In a
movement away from her previous collection, which centered around layering and accumulation,
Giberson presents an undoing: to remove, strip down, abstract.

The collection balances graphic structured lines with remnants of form. A tuxedo jacket with zipped off
panels, a hand knit sweater with stitches removed almost but not quite to the point of coming undone
and a silk dress with manipulated slashes pulling apart the fabric creating a new material. The collection
focuses on various techniques and manipulation of materials to alter silhouette and reveal new layers.

Materials include silk chiffons and tulles, lightweight wool suitings, linens, superfine cottons, stretch leather,
and linen/cotton denim. Color is removed as the collection progresses. Beginning in tones of black, indigo,
blush, nude and ending in a full range of whites.
