Join us at the staithe at Reedham, with hire and holiday boats passing in the River Yare, and a yacht with mast down making a very good demo of how to come alongside a quay with a strong tide running. However, unlike this example, do make sure your crew ALWAYS wears a lifejacket!
Here's some advice for coming alongside:
First, take a good look to find a place where your boat will fit alongside the staithe . . .
Work out which way the tide or current is flowing, and turn the boat to head into the flow - against the current. You can see leaves, etc, in the water moving, compared with a stationary object - if there is no oncoming traffic, even stop your boat to see which way it drifts.
As you get closer to your mooring spot, slow down until the boat is almost stationary against the water flow, parallel to the bank.
Steer to gently nudge the boat towards the quay, until it is close enough for your crew to step ashore.
if you want to see how this works, find a clear area of bank to practice on . . . and take it slowly.
