Today is my first borns 6th birthday. It is also Winter Solstice - a return to light, a reminder that after the darkest night, there is rebirth. Words cannot express how much the symbolic meaning of winter solstice resonates with what Bowie’s birth meant to me.

My first marriage was an abusive marriage. I did not fully see or understand how bad it was until things started happening in front of him. That’s when I drew my line in the sand. That’s when things got really ugly, really fast. I don’t think I can adequately describe what it feels like to untangle yourself from a trauma bond. That divorce was the hardest thing I have ever gone through. On the darkest days, there was one thing that got me through, one person, and it was Bowie. In so many ways, he saved my life.

When I started thinking about doing a birthday winter solstice crush for him, my attention was pulled back to a conversation I had with ‪@emilycrushesasmr‬. We realized that we shared a common thread - we both survived traumatic circumstances, and it was our kids that got us through. I thought it would be so special to share this crush with her. About the crush: I wanted to somehow show the beauty of dark to light, but also that the two can coexist at the same time. We can’t have one without the other. I have an assortment of reforms, vibrantly dyed blocks and, my favorite part, dark grey pasted fresh blocks. I spent way too long trying to figure out how to edit parts of this video down to post on other platforms. In the end, I just decided to post the whole crush. It was impossible to pick one part alone.
