Dr. Greg Codelli: LANAP is a laser-based technology used to treat and stabilize the periodontal disease. So, that prevention is effective. The LANAP procedure is a very simple procedure to go through.

I do recommend sedation for this because this is usually a two to three-hour hands-on procedure. I want the patient to feel comfortable.

The first step involves using the laser to pass between the gum and tooth, remove the diseased tissue in that area and sterilize the area as well.

The next step involves cleaning the contaminated root. The next step involves scoring through the bone to stimulate bone healing. This is why this is a surgical procedure, the bone is being treated.

The last step in the surgery is a second pass of the laser to close the wound, creating a fibrin clot to entice the body to heal from the inside out.

And finally, in some cases, we adjust the bite to reduce force to get the best wound healing. The patient can expect a couple of two to three days of soreness and swelling.

Usually alleviated with the use of over-the-counter analgesics like Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen.

Conventional surgery is used for the same reason as LANAP. Both procedures are used to treat and stabilize the periodontal condition in a patient. The point is these procedures are used to get to the bone. Because this is where all the actions are set[?] in patients with moderate to severe periodontal disease.

In a conventional approach, an incision is made the gum to tease[?] the gum back off the root and bone to get to the bone and either place a regenerative material to the place or contour and reshape the bone.

So that when the gum is stitched back up, the periodontal condition can be maintained.

In LANAP, the procedure is much less invasive. The gum is not teased away as much from the root or the bone. And we rely more on technology to help us sterilize the pocket and get some regeneration of tissue.
