Four months ago, a boy and girl from Ghal Kalan village in Moga district entered into a love marriage and left their homes. Following this, the boy’s family was allegedly beaten by the village sarpanch and the girl’s family. The boy's family has accused them of the assault, and a video of the incident has since gone viral.
The victim, Jasvir Kaur, the boy’s mother, stated that her son had a love marriage and that both the boy and girl belong to different communities. She said they are unaware of the couple’s current whereabouts. Jasvir alleged that the sarpanch and the girl’s family assaulted her family, locked up their house, and evicted them. She added that they approached the police, but their concerns were ignored, forcing them to spend nights on the streets.

Meanwhile, Sukhchain Singh, the husband of the sarpanch, claimed that when the panchayat had convened earlier, the villagers collectively decided that if any boy and girl from the same village married each other, they would not be allowed to reside in the village. He stated that the boy’s family continued to live in the village despite this, which angered the girl’s family and led to the clash.
