Spina bifida is a birth defect that occurs when the spine and spinal cord don't form properly. It's a type of neural tube defect.
The neural tube is the structure in a developing embryo that eventually becomes the baby's brain, spinal cord, and the tissues that enclose them.

Are you aware that Spina Bifida is a condition that affects the spinal cord and the bones of the spine, resulting in varying degrees of disability? It is a complex condition that manifests in different ways, and it is important to identify the type of Spina Bifida you have to understand the best treatment options available.
The three types of Spina Bifida include:
1. Occulta
This is the mildest form of Spina Bifida, and it is often not diagnosed until later in life. Occulta occurs when one or more of the spinal bones do not close properly, but the spinal cord remains inside the spinal canal. Many people with Occulta do not experience any symptoms or require treatment.
2. Meningocele
Meningocele occurs when the protective membranes around the spinal cord protrude out of the spinal canal. The spinal cord remains in its normal position, and the condition is often diagnosed at birth. Individuals with Meningocele may require surgery to remove the sac and repair any damage to the spine.
3. Myelomeningocele
Myelomeningocele is the most severe form of Spina Bifida, in which the spinal cord and protective membranes protrude out of the spinal canal, often leading to nerve damage and physical disabilities. Treatment options include surgery, physical therapy, and medication.
