Volumetric weight, also known as dimensional weight, is a calculation used to determine the weight of a package or shipment based on its volume rather than its actual weight. It's commonly used by shipping carriers to calculate freight charges.

The volumetric weight is calculated by multiplying the length, width, and height of the package in centimeters or inches, and then dividing the result by a volumetric divisor (usually 5,000 or 6,000 for international shipments).

Formula:

Volumetric Weight (kg) = (Length x Width x Height) / Volumetric Divisor

For example:

Package dimensions: 50 cm x 40 cm x 30 cm
Volumetric divisor: 5,000
Volumetric weight: (50 x 40 x 30) / 5,000 = 12 kg

This means that even if the package weighs less than 12 kg, the shipping carrier will charge based on the volumetric weight of 12 kg.

Volumetric weight is used to ensure that packages are charged fairly based on the space they occupy on a truck or plane, rather than just their actual weight.
