Churchgate is an area in South Mumbai.
It is a major station in the western line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway.

Thousands of people travel through the railways in Mumbai and Churchgate is one of the major platform among them.

Let’s look at the history of Churchgate.

During the eighteenth and up to the mid-19th century, Mumbai Previously called as Bombay) was a walled city. The city walls had three gates, and Church Gate, named after St. Thomas Cathedral, Mumbai was one of the gates.

The gate was situated near the present day location of Flora Fountain. In the mid-19th century, the city walls were torn down to aid in the expansion program.

Churchgate is also a major railway terminus on the Western line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway.

This is the first station of the Western Railway suburban network of Mumbai.

One of the three gates of the fortified island city of Mumbai was at this place. This gate led straight to Saint Thomas Cathedral Church, Hence it was named as "Church Gate". The gate was demolished in 1860. The Construction of station was completed by 1870 and It was named as Churchgate Station.

As the day sets in, people leave from their office and head straight to station to catch their respective train. These people travel up and down everyday from this major station and it is their lifeline.
