I heard a discussion the other day in a music department between two of the music staff, who held court in the corridor about what constitutes real instruments, proper instrument and natural instruments.

I was there as a visitor, so I decided I wouldn’t join in such a pointless debate, but I thought I had to say something about it…

Violin, piano, bassoon, oboe, trumpet, tuba, cello, theremin, Fender telecaster, moot synth, Hammond organ….

These are all real and proper, but none of them is natural: the only one that is is the human voice..
