Zomato is a food delivery app which is loved by every Indian household, still it is unable to perform in the stock market. From the high of 170 it nearly touched 40. Investors were extremely excited to see how this stock would perform after the listing. Initially it did give listing gains of a whooping 53 percent, only to fall by almost a whooping 75 percent. The business model seems great, it has multiple streams of income, it is the market leader and the company is also rapidly expanding. Then why is this stock being beaten down by the stock market?
On 23rd July the lock in period of the holding of the anchor investors ended. Which exposed almost 70 percent of Zomato's stake in the open market. The result- 12 percent fall in a matter of 2 days.
Zomato has always been a loss-making company. Despite being several steps ahead of the competition and expanding at such a rapid scale- operating in 23 countries and 300 new cities, the irony is that it has also expanded its losses. Such tech-based start-ups who are growing at a pace which is mind boggling and still not able to report decent profits are facing the wrath of the investors and are being severely devalued. The question is- will Zomato be able to perform in the stock market and make investors happy or the future for this food delivery remains grim.
