Former U.S. Rep. Wiley Nickel announced Tuesday he is suspending his campaign for U.S. Senate and endorsing former North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper for the seat currently held by Republican Sen. Thom Tillis.

Tillis announced in June that he would not be seeking re-election, just hours after voting no on Trump’s tax and spending plan — dubbed the “Big Beautiful Bill.” The senator cited “political theatre and partisan gridlock” as key reasons for stepping away from the Senate.

President Donald Trump posted that is was, “Great news! Senator Thom Tillis will not be seeking reelection.”

Nickel said in a statement, "We started this campaign to send Thom Tillis packing. Well, mission accomplished, I guess."
