On the night of 15-16 October 1987, Britain was hit by one of the most severe hurricanes in recorded history. Remembered not only for the devastation wrought across England's south east but for the erroneous weather predicitions that preceded it, the storm saw 15 million trees brought down and tens of thousands of citizens lose access to power. The following day, ITN's cameras recorded the damage, and asked quentions of the government as well as the Met Office as to why the violent gales were not foreseen, and how methods of weather forecasting might be improved in the future.
