Leonardo Bautista-Gomez, Senior Researcher of Status, gives a talk on Data Availability Sampling (#DAS) from a network perspective at #EDCON2023! The main content of his presentation includes Ethereum scaling, DAS structure, the modeling input, and the DAS simulator his team is building. Leo says if we think of Ethereum as a small computer in the 1990s, we want to transform that into a supercomputer, and when we talk about performance in blockchain technology, we talk about the number of transactions per second, and today Ethereum handles about 15 tx/sec, and we want to scale it to tens of thousands of transactions per second in the future.

Leo emphasizes that in order to do that, we are focusing on a rollup-centric Ethereum roadmap, but the thing is that rollups need data where they have to put their information, and for that, we need to increase the block size. Leo says today the average block size on Ethereum is about 100KB, and we want to increase that to around 32MB. The problem is we don't want all the computers on the Ethereum network to be supercomputers and to be able to handle so much data, so to solve this, we have to do sharding, more specifically, data sharding, and when you are doing data-sharding, you are basically distributing the block in different chunks and you are sending these chunks to different validators in the network, but nobody in the network has the entire block. But there is a risk that if some nodes go offline, you may lose some of the data, and this forces us to do data availability sampling. Leo goes on to explain Reed-Solomon encoding, KZG commitment, 2D RS data structure, DAS block structure, and more. You can learn more about Data Availability Sampling (DAS) from Leo’s presentation at EDCON 2023!
