Artists find inspiration everywhere, but most pop music deals in emotional generalities: romance, freedom of spirit, getting old, etc. So would you believe Eric Nam’s new album was inspired by, of all things, real estate? When the pandemic hit, the hard-to-classify singer noticed his friends buying homes, which left him wondering if homeownership is about a "sense of identity, or self, or status, or wealth.” In that way, ‘House on a Hill’ is indeed about getting old; and don’t be mistaken, Nam is a masterful pop force. Born in the states, Nam found success in his 20s via Korea’s mighty musical pipeline. He emerged as GQ Korea’s Man of the Year. The “Love Die Young” dude spent the last few years planting his flag in the US/English markets. ‘House’ is the third project in this era. The previous pair of projects, 2019’s ‘Before We Begin’ and ‘There And Back Again’ assisted in pushing Nam past a billion lifetime streams. Yeah, the masses definitely dig that silky voice of his - and, boy, was it on point in our studio. “Only For A Moment” conjures a hazy aura with its gleaming guitars (the band’s tight). Meanwhile, the worldly rhythms of “undefined” gave the 34-year-old an excuse to bop around the studio. This is pop at its most fun, with a refreshing dash of wisdom.
