Haiti was burdened with a crippling debt to France following its independence in 1804 after France demanded reparations in 1825 for the loss of its colony and enslaved labour. Haiti agreed to pay 150 million francs, later reduced to 90 million, and had to take out high-interest loans to meet the payments.

This debt consumed much of Haiti’s national budget for over a century, severely limiting its ability to invest in infrastructure and development and contributing to widespread poverty and political instability. Haiti continued to make payments until 1947, and the long-term impact of this unjust debt has been a major factor in its ongoing economic challenges.

The U.S. has maintained varying levels of control over Haiti since the late 19th century, driven by a combination of geopolitical strategy, economic interests, and broader foreign policy goals, including the protection of the Panama Canal and anti-communism.
