Vice President MUTALE NALUMANGO has called for the immediate stop to illegal mining in the country to safeguard life.

And the nine people that were buried alive at an illegal gravel quarry in Chongwe district, after part of the ground collapsed have been buried.

Speaking during the Funeral Service of the quarry accident victims, the Vice President said losing vibrant and productive young people who would have contributed to the country's development is painful.

Mrs. NALUMANGO said the accident could have been avoided had the mining of gravel been done legally.

The Vice President also called for harmonization in the practicing of mining and issuances of artisanal licenses to small scale miners in the District.

Mrs. NALUMANGO said it should be the collective Responsibility of everyone from Government, traditional leaders and the local people to ensure that illegal mining is curtailed to avoid the loss of life.
