Shanghai Tower, the world's second-tallest building along with the Epicenter of the Coronavirus the City of Wuhan and other provinces are flooded due to severe weather conditions and the release of the Infamous 3 Gorges Dam.
"If water enters these cracks, there could be negative effects, so we are fixing them very carefully," Pan Jiazhong, head of the dam's inspection group, said yesterday.
He denied that the cracks threatened the dam's safety, but said they could expand and cause leaking unless repaired.
The reservoir now extends upstream for 560km (350 miles), with a maximum water depth of 135 metres (440ft).
A failure of the dam could have catastrophic consequences downstream in the fertile and densely populated middle Yangtze valley.
Another official said the project had already displaced more than 700,000 people: a higher figure than previous estimates.
Guo Shuyan, director of the construction committee, said that dozens of towns had been evacuated and 13 larger urban communities rebuilt on higher land.
At least 600,000 more people will have to be moved from settlements along the river banks .
What is The Shanghai Tower?
The tower had an estimated construction cost of US$2.4 billion. Shanghai Tower is a 632-metre (2,073 ft), 128-story megatall skyscraper in Lujiazui, Pudong, Shanghai. It is the world's second-tallest building by height to architectural top and it shares the record (along with the Ping An Finance Center). Since opening the tower has had significant maintenance issues and remains largely unoccupied.
Shanghai Tower is the winner of Tien-yow Jeme Civil Engineering Prize of 2018
What is The 3 Gorges Dam?
As well as producing electricity, the dam is intended to increase the Yangtze River's shipping capacity. By providing flood storage space, the dam reduces the potential for floods downstream which could possibly affect millions. China regards the project as a monumental social and economical success, with the design of state-of-the-art large turbines and a move toward limiting greenhouse gas emissions. However, the dam flooded archaeological and cultural sites, displaced some 1.3 million people, and had caused significant ecological changes including an increased risk of landslides. The dam has been controversial both domestically and abroad.
Where is Wuhan?
Wuhan is the capital of Hubei Province in the People's Republic of China. It is the largest city in Hubei and the most populous city in Central China, with a population of over 11 million, the ninth-most populous Chinese city and one of the nine National Central Cities of China.
