Pearl Diving

The UAE is known as a futuristic metropolis, but it started from very humble beginnings. The first serious trade was the arabian pearls where pearl divers would dive down on one breath of air to pick oysters. Their chance of finding a pearl was 1 in 100, of which only 10% were good enough to trade for a decent value.

The pearl trade died out when the Japanese learned how to make synthetic pearls which plunged the price and ruined the industry. Today traditional pearl farming is not practiced much but we went to Suwaidi Pearls where they farm them and gave us a history tour.

I previously trained as a free diver before this episode so they gave me the chance to dive for one. Check out what I got.
