These are all the exterior reef modifications that the SS United States has under gone since August 3rd 2025. The previous owners (among many since the late 1970s), the SS United States Conservancy had to let go of the ship (it had been sitting idle in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for over 30 years) due to not being able to pay for dock costs. Something could have been done about saving the ship as preserved, such as advertising the ship more and raising awareness and giving affordable ship tours (there were tours but were very costly and out of reach for most people) and raising money to do something with the ship (as far as keeping it above water), such as repainting it, turning it into a hotel, a club, a casino, a mix of two or all three of those things.

In October of 2024, Okaloosa County bought the ship with intentions of sinking the ship to become the world's biggest artificial reef (late 2025 or early 2026). A few attempts to stop that from happening have failed. Between February 2025 and early March of 2025 the ship was towed from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Mobile, Alabama to begin the changes, interior and exterior modifications to sink the ship about 20 miles off the coast of Ft Walton Beach/Destin in Florida in around 180 feet of water with around 55 feet of water above the ship. Okaloosa County also plans to build a SS United States Museum in the Ft Walton Beach area with artifacts, history, photos, and memorabilia of the ship. Four of the bigger artifacts that will be at the museum will be her two Funnel smoke stacks (which were the biggest ever put on an ocean liner), her observation/crows mast and at least one propeller. The Museum should open in 2026 or 2027.

NOTE: The second funnel pictures go in reverse, go from already off to being take off instead of being take off to off just wanted to mention that.
