Описание к видео KEM, Russia. Transit Point to SOLOVKI Special Prison Camp (The Mother of the GULAG). VLOG

Kem is the town in the Republic of Karelia, Russia. It is located in the place where Kem rivers meets Kem Bay of the White Sea. 350km north from Petrozavodsk, the capital town of Karelia.

Kem is first mentioned yet in 1450 when it was a volost (administrative submission) of Marfa Boretskaya. Later she donated it to the Solovetsky Monastery. Kem got a status of town in 1785.

In the early Soviet days (approximately from 1923to 1939), Kem was a transit point for the prisoners of “Solovki” special prison camp located on Solovetsky Islands in the White Sea. It is considered as “the mother of GULAG”

Kem turned to be already the 8th town I have visited during my Road Trip 2022
