Kara Walker: Fortuna and the Immortality Garden (Machine) | A LOVE LETTER TO ART

Описание к видео Kara Walker: Fortuna and the Immortality Garden (Machine) | A LOVE LETTER TO ART

💌 Here’s a preview of SFMOMA’s latest installation by Kara E-Walker, 𝙁𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙪𝙣𝙖 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙄𝙢𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙂𝙖𝙧𝙙𝙚𝙣 (𝙈𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙚).

This incredible work by the acclaimed artist is FREE to see and is located at the rear entrance to the museum on Howard Street.

“In the central pedestal, set atop a field of black obsidian—a volcanic glass thought to repel negative energies and heal past traumas-Walker's Gardeners move with clocklike precision, enacting a curious vignette with prophetic purpose.

At center stage, a female automaton levitates to phenomenal heights, at times flailing and at other times going limp in seeming acceptance of her fate.

Nearby, the title figure, Fortuna, has much to say but lacks a voice. Instead, as visitors approach, she performs a short choreography and offers each person a paper fortune as absolution, provocation, and souvenir.”

The work is on view until Spring 2026.
