CONCERTO in G [BWV 592]
Het Concerto in G majeur BWV 592 is een bewerking van het CONCERTO voor VIOOL-SOLO, STRIJKERS en B.C. gecomponeerd door Prins Johann Ernst van Saksen-Weimar.
Dit werk was destijds populair.
Het eerste deel ("Allegro assai" in de orkestpartituur) boeit vanwege de contrasterende werking tussen het hoofdthema op het Hoofdwerk, waar J. S. Bach in zijn bewerking dubbel pedaal voorschrijft voor de orkestrale tutti, en het concertino op het borstwerk met het zo fraai contrasterende tweede thema in triolen.

JOHANN ERNST PRINZ VON SACHSEN-WEIMAR (1696-1715) kreeg als kind vioolles van G.C. Eilenstein hofcomponist te Weimar. Daarna kreeg hij klavecimbel- en compositieles van Johann Gottfried Walther. Van february 1711 tot en met July 1713 studeerde Prins Johann Ernst aan de universiteit van Utrecht. Vanuit Nederland liet hij Italiaanse muziek naar het hof te Weimar versturen. De Bach-transcripties zijn gemaakt in de periode juli 1713 - juli 1714 Het is niet zeker of Johann Ernst de opdrachtgever was voor de arrangementen, of dat Bach de door de prins gecomponeerde en verzamelde werken op eigen initiatief (voor studie doeleinden) arrangeerde.
Johann Ernst stierf in Frankfurt ondanks alle mogelijke medische hulp, aan de gevolgen van een infectie aan het been. Zijn moeder had een gebroken hart door dit verlies. Hij werd ter aarde besteld te Homburg in het familiegraf van zijn moeder. Een periode van rouw werd uitgeroepen in Weimar van 11 augustus tot 9 november 1715. Muziek werd verboden, ook in de kerk. Bach staakte in de rouwperiode het componeren van cantates.

The Concerto in G major BWV 592 is an arrangement of the CONCERTO for VIOLIN-SOLO, STRIJKERS and B.C. composed by Prince Johann Ernst of Saxen-Weimar.
This work was popular at the time.
The first movement ("Allegro assai" in the orchestral score) is captivating because of the contrasting effect between the main theme on the Hoofdwerk, where JS Bach prescribes a double pedal in his arrangement for the orchestral tutti, and the concertino on the 'Rugwerk' with the so beautifully contrasting second theme in triplets.

JOHANN ERNST PRINZ VON SACHSEN-WEIMAR (1696-1715) received violin lessons from G.C. Eilenstein court composer in Weimar. He then received harpsichord lessons and composition lessons from Johann Gottfried Walther. From February 1711 to July 1713, Prince Johann Ernst studied at the University of Utrecht. He had Italian music sent from the Netherlands to the court in Weimar. The Bach transcripts were made in the period July 1713 - July 1714. It is not certain whether Johann Ernst was the commissioner for the arrangements, or whether Bach arranged the works composed and collected by the prince on his own initiative (for study purposes). Despite all possible medical help, the prince died at the age of 18 in Frankfurt from the consequences of a leg infection. Leaving his mother's broken heart behind. He was buried in Homburg in his mother's family grave. A period of mourning was declared in Weimar from August 11 to November 9, 1715. Music was banned, including in the church. Bach stopped composing cantatas during the mourning period.
