Is Kobe's CHINATOWN better than Yokohama's CHINATOWN!??! Nankinmachi 南京町 Kobe

After visiting Yokohama's Chinatown (横浜中華街), we are off to another Chinatown down in Kobe!

When the Port of Kobe opened in 1868, Chinese immigrants from Guangdong and Fujian started settling in Kobe and established a Chinatown. Because many Chinese were also from Nanjin (Nanking), the neighborhood was named "Nankinmachi" (Nanking Town). Nankinmachi was a vibrant area bustling with restaurants, business, and homes in the 1920s, but was destroyed by allied bombings during WW2. Nankinmachi was re-built by the remaining Chinese community, but unfortunately was severely damaged again in 1995 during the Great Hanshin Earthquake. It was quickly rebuilt by the Chinese community, and Nankinmachi today is once again a thriving area with tons of visitors!
