Visiting Ntarama & Nyamata genocide memorials in Rwanda (15000 were murdered while hiding at church)

After my first evening in Kigali, I headed south of the city to visit the infamous Ntarama and Nyamata genocide memorials. Located about 25 to 40 km from the capital, these two former churches were the site of the mass slaughter of minority Tutsis and moderate Hutus at the hands of extremist Hutu militias. As the genocide unfolded, the world watched in horror as the United Nations stood by and did nothing, allowing over 1,000,000 Rwandans to be senselessly exterminated.

Visiting these historic sites was in no way a "tourist attraction", but a lesson in the horrors of such crimes against humanity. The memorials are raw, gripping, and real; the emotional experience a visceral one. If you ever have the opportunity to visit Rwanda, a visit to these memorials is well worth the detour.
