Creative Movement, Adapted for the Preschool Classroom
Teaching creative dance in a preschool setting is a whole different experience than teaching in a traditional studio, and in this video, I’m taking you behind the scenes to show you exactly what that looks like!
This vlog captures one of my on-site classes inside a preschool classroom, where I share how I adapt my Dance to Learn® curriculum to work within real-life classroom limitations. From tight corners to hard floors and crowded wall space, I walk you through how to think creatively and intentionally about space, flow, and engagement when teaching young children in a school setting.
🏗️ What You’ll See in This Video:
Creative Setup in a Small Space:
See how I reconfigure the classroom to fit a safe, exciting, and engaging dance experience, even without mirrors or a typical dance floor!
Apple Tree Obstacle Course:
Using balance beams, stepping stones, and props, I build a thematic apple tree obstacle course that blends storytelling with gross motor skill practice and spatial awareness.
Conceptual Dance Teaching:
I focus on teaching the dance concept of Motions, helping children explore the difference between locomotor (traveling) and non-locomotor (stationary) movement.
🍎 Hint: Stationary moves happen on stepping stones and domes, while traveling steps take place on beams and cones!
Flexibility in Teaching:
Learn how I adjust lesson plans in the moment based on class dynamics, room setup, and transitions. Teaching in schools means things don’t always go as planned—and that’s okay!
💡 Perfect for Teachers Who:
Teach mobile dance classes in schools, preschools, or community centers
Need ideas for teaching in tight or non-traditional spaces
Want inspiration for creative obstacle courses and prop-based dance
Are exploring concept-based dance education for young dancers
This video is part of my ongoing effort to show real-life teaching in action: the good, the messy, the magical. Whether you're a dance teacher, studio owner, or early childhood educator, I hope it gives you ideas, encouragement, and confidence to teach anywhere!
