My friend Ramanujar Maulana is a passionate heritage activist. Along with his group of “cycling yogis,” he pedals across Chennai, tracking down forgotten and overlooked heritage sites. One of their fascinating finds was the Thiruvanmiyur Clock Tower, located right next to the Marundeeswarar Temple. This structure is believed to have been erected sometime in the 1960s, at a time when Thiruvanmiyur was still considered remote—a quiet stretch far from the bustling city. Interestingly, this might have been one of the first clock towers in Chennai to be built in a modernist or even brutalist style. That’s significant, considering most clock towers that came up in the 1940s were done in the more popular Art Deco style. However, it’s unclear how long the Thiruvanmiyur Clock Tower remained functional. By the time Ramanujar Maulana photographed it, the tower had already fallen into disuse and was in a state of complete neglect. Recently, we learned that the clock tower has been demolished altogether. And with that, yet another piece of Chennai’s layered history has vanished.
