We went to IIM Kozhikode's Kochi campus and sat down with Prof. Anandakuttan to talk about IIM Kozikode's new BMS programme. We're very grateful for this opportunity and their hospitality!
To address the elephant in the room:
When asked how this compares to SSCBS or SRCC (esp wrt. placements), Prof. Anandakuttan stressed that this program isn’t meant to be another BBA or BCom... it’s more like a B.Tech for the commerce and management world. A professional 4-year degree that will prove its value over time. Of course, for many, it’s hard to believe until people see results. That’s fair.
Right now, we are very excited to see the programme develop. Obviously, the fee is high. That in itself might close doors for many people. The mentions of scholarships/freeships and their policy to not forego opportunities felt promising. We hope that students push for this. Even a 20% reduction would make it similar to existing IPM programmes.
Unlike IITs or NITs, IIMs don’t get regular public funding. The government helps with land and initial setup, but after that, they have to run things on their own. So yeah, the fees are high. Totally fair if that’s a dealbreaker for someone. These choices are personal.
Truth is, many people will be satisfied only once they see the placement reports. That’s four years away. Fair ask, fair enough. Till then, we just wanted to put their vision out there... plus, we didn't want to go easy on the interview: that’s why we kept coming back to placements. We didn’t go easy: we quoted numbers, asked about SSCBS, SRCC, kept asking how UG students could land PG-level salaries. We thank sir for being grateful enough to share his perspective.
If they get this right, it could change the UG scene completely. Might even push more IIMs to explore this path. At this stage, obviously there’s no report to show. Only time will answer that. But if it does happen, and a UG degree can offer what this one promises, that’s a pretty big shift. Sir summed it well—you may not need an MBA after this, just like how a BTech grad can head teams straight out of college. That kind of outcome from a 4-year UG in commerce is rare here. So yeah, we’re curious to see where this goes.
Off-camera, he was very clear: they’ll back the UG students, placement support will be handled by the same team that does it for the MBA folks.
Of course, money matters. Everyone’s situation is different. I asked a taxi driver about PGs: food, laundry, and all basics under 1.5 to 2L a year is doable. But yeah, 9L a year is still 36L across four years. It’s a big call. And it’s your call.
