Celebrating the States Block of the month: Minnesota Quilt Block Tutorial 🇺🇸

Our version of the Minnesota quilt block uses three fabrics:
• Light (white)
• Medium (light blue)
• Dark (navy)

🧵 Fabric Requirements for this Block (12½" x 12½", finishes at 12" square):
• 2 light squares - 6 1/2" x 6 1/2"
• 4 light rectangles - 2 1/2'" x 5 1/2"

•. 1 medium square -2 1/2" x 2 1/2"
• 8 medium rectangles - 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" ( 2 1/2" x 4" will also work)

• 2 dark squares - 6 1/2" x 6 1/2"

🧳 A Note About Minnesota

My connection to Minnesota runs deep — and that’s exactly why I saved it for last. It is my FAVORITE state!

I was born in Minnesota. I lived in Albert Lea as a small child and later in St. Paul as a newlywed and brand-new mom. I was even there for the GREAT HALLOWEEN BLIZZARD of 1991 — now that was something crazy!

We lived just a few blocks from the State Fairgrounds, and in the past 35 years we’ve only missed one Minnesota State Fair — besides the year it was canceled for Covid. We usually go for multiple days so we can visit all of our favorite spots and still have time to discover something new.

Minnesota is also my favorite place for day trips. We especially love heading up north to Duluth and Grand Marais for a longer getaway. There are so many beautiful and fun things to see and do. The Boundary Waters, Lake Superior, and the numerous Minnesota State Parks deserve to be experienced over and over again!

Our oldest son and his wife live in St. Paul, and both of our sons (and my future daughter-in-law!) have run Grandma’s Marathon in Duluth. I was so thankful to be there in person to cheer them on — such special memories!

When our family is ready for some “big city” shopping, we head north to Minneapolis. A day at the Mall of America — especially the LEGO store — is all we need for a little adventure. We explore small businesses in our favorite neighborhoods, eat at amazing local restaurants, and always manage to find something fun to experience together.

I’m so thankful to live close to Minnesota. It’s never far from my heart. We love Minnesota — and especially its people — because it’s truly the people who make it such a wonderful place to live and visit. ❤️

📅 About the “Celebrate the States” Series

• All blocks are rotary cut and video-only tutorials
• The quilt will include 56 blocks, set 7 across by 8 down
• Finished size (with 1" sashing): 92" x 105"
• Optional border sizes:
– +3" border = 98" x 111"
– +6" border = 104" x 117"
– No border = 84" x 96"

🧵 Want a smaller quilt? Do a double-sided version! Use 25 blocks on the front and 25 on the back. With 1" sashing and a 3" border, it’ll measure about 72" x 72".
