5 things I learned from having houseplants 🪴

I’ve been seriously collecting plants since the pandemic and let’s just say that it has been A WILD JOURNEY. And because we are self reflective queens, I wanted to share with you 5 things I’ve learned thanks to having houseplants.

Lesson 1:
I overwater my plants just like my relationships. What can I say, I am a nurturer. Each time I pass a plant, I can’t help but think it needs some water. Does it though? This also bleeds into my personal relationships. Which is okay in moderation. When I care about someone, I routinely step in and take on their problems. Does it feel overbearing? Probably. Should I stop? Yes.

Lesson 2:
It’s okay to let things go. Don’t get me wrong, I still struggle with this. I still have containers with dead string of hearts propagation experiments from months ago. Whoops. There’s definitely something in my subconscious preventing me from letting go. Either guilt or maybe a sense of control? But letting go of plants is a good thing, because it helps you be flexible and accept that there are some things in life you can’t control.

Lesson 3:
Patience. I can be impulsive at times. NYC has also made this worse with how fast paced everything is. But plants unfortunately have a mind of their own, and I can’t necessarily will a plant to grow a new leaf or roots faster. It’s truly about the long game.

Lesson 4:
Growth isn’t linear. You can’t expect a plant or yourself to grow in the same way or direction each time. There may be moments when you and your plant take a step back, but ultimately, you’ll move several steps forward. I once accidentally broke my Jose Buono Philodendron. It ended up getting chopped back, but it’s bounced back since then.

Lesson 5:
Not every plant or person is going to like you. Orchids? Hate me. Anthuriums? Hate me too. No matter what I do. Those plants hate me. As a recovering people pleaser, this is a bitter pill to swallow. I’ve always sought validation from other people and other things. It was the only way for me to feel valued or accomplished. In reality, the only thing that matters if that you like you.
