Construction
Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II built the fort in 1734 as a retreat for himself and his family. It was originally named Sudarshangarh, but was later renamed Nahargarh, which means "abode of tigers".
Expansion
The fort was expanded in 1868.
Defense
The fort was a formidable barrier that protected Jaipur from enemies. It was part of a defense ring that also included Amer Fort and Jaigarh Fort.
Historical significance
The fort was a site of treaties between the Rajput and Maratha forces in the 18th century.
Madhavendra Bhawan
The fort houses Madhavendra Bhawan, a summer palace built by Sawai Madho Singh. The palace has 12 boudoirs for the queens and a suite for the king, all connected by corridors with murals.
