Lake Como Travel Vlog - 2 Days Exploring Varenna & Belaggio

In this episode I spend 2 days exploring Varenna and Belaggio on Lake Como. A beautiful area of Italy. This two day itinerary should provide you some guidance to hopefully also enjoy your experience here.

Varenna is a picturesque and traditional village, located on the eastern shore of Lake Como, Italy. It is an essential stop for anyone wishing to visit one of the most typical and peaceful towns of the lake. 

This small village, where you can still breathe in the traditions of yesteryear, is home to elegant villas with botanical gardens (such as Villa Monastero and Villa Cipressi) and beautiful walks, such as the climb up to Castle of Vezio.

A visit to Varenna is a must if you are in Milan (from where you can reach Varenna after a one-hour train ride). From Varenna you can also reach the Lake Como towns such as Bellagio, Menaggio or Tremezzina, which are just 15-20 minutes away by ferry.

If you arrive in Varenna from another town on the lake, most likely via ferry, you will land near the Passeggiata degli Innamorati (Walk of lovers), one of the most inspiring and romantic walks along Lake Como.The Passeggiata degli Innamorati leads to a beautiful and much-photographed bay, the famous Riva Grande. Here you will find several cafes, restaurants, local artisan shops and ice cream parlours: everything you need for a rejuvenating break before resuming the tour.

Another of the most beautiful things to see in Varenna is Piazza San Giorgio, the town’s central square that houses the Church of San Giorgio.

The Castle of Vezio is a medieval fortress that has stood for more than a thousand years on the promontory overlooking Varenna. The terrace adjacent to the castle offers a breathtaking view of Lake Como and is home to the “ghosts,” which are white plaster sculptures made each year in the summer with the help of people who pose for an hour.

In addition, on Friday and Saturday evenings in summer (usually from early June to early September) the castle organises aperitifs on the panoramic terrace at a cost of €35 per person.

Varenna’s pier is located in Via Imbarcadero. Here you can catch boats to any town on the lake (as anticipated, central lake towns such as Bellagio, Menaggio, and Tremezzo are only 15-20 minutes away by boat).

Bellagio is a small jewel located on the promontory that separates the two southern branches of Lake Como, those culminating in the cities of Como and Lecco.

It is one of the most glamorous and romantic destinations in Lombardy and Italy. In fact, the well-known “Pearl of Lake Como” is home to a colorful historic center, beautiful gardens and charming neighborhoods such as San Giovanni.The narrow streets of Bellagio are so beautiful that a simple walk is worth the visit. If you arrive in Bellagio by boat, you will probably reach the center of Bellagio by going up the alleys Salita Mella or Salita Serbelloni, two of the most photographed alleys in town.

The hamlet of San Giovanni is located about a 15- to 20-minute walk from the center of Bellagio, is very small and little known, but worth a short visit.I recommend reaching this neighborhood by walking through the paths of the gardens of Villa Melzi, so as to avoid the road traveled by cars as much as possible. Here you can admire the spectacular Chiesa di San Giovanni. 

If you visit the San Giovanni neighborhood, don’t miss the House of Flying Bicycles. A real gem!
