Volkswagen Australia has crowned its smallest commercial van-based people-mover range with the 2022 Volkswagen Caddy California.

Based on the Caddy Maxi five-seater, the California offers the option of a self-contained weekend getaway on wheels, with a two-person fold-out bed, table, innovative storage at every corner and other handy campervan features.

There’s no fridge or stove – let alone shower or toilet – and it’s far from cheap, so we sent Sam Charlwood to discover just how suitable the diesel-powered compact camper is for a weekend adventure.
