Bikis Bano's rapists will go back to jail. The Supreme Court has invalidated the Gujarat government's decision to grant remission to the 11 convicts in the gangrape of Bilkis Bano and the murder of seven of her family members during the 2002 Gujarat riots. Rejecting the convicts' plea to safeguard their liberty, the court directed them to report to jail authorities within two weeks.
Highlighting the lack of jurisdiction, the court emphasized that the Gujarat government wasn't authorized to entertain the remission application or issue such orders. It clarified that the state responsible for deciding remission is where the accused were sentenced, not where the offense occurred or the accused were imprisoned. The court criticized Gujarat for overstepping Maharashtra's authority in issuing remission orders.
