প্রাচীন কাল থেকেই কালো পাথরের পাহাড় কৈলাস শৃঙ্গ কে পৃথিবীর স্তম্ভ বলে মনে করা হয়। উচ্চতায় পৃথিবীর সবচেয়ে বড় পাহাড় এভারেস্টের চেয়েও ২২০০ মিটার কম হলেও আজ পর্যন্ত অপরাজেয়ই থেকে গেল এই শৃঙ্গ। এটি এমন একটি পর্বত যার চূড়ায় আজ পর্যন্ত কেউ উঠতে পারেনি । কিন্তু কেন তা জয় করা সম্ভব হয়নি এর রহস্য এখনো ভেদ করা যায়নি। যখনি কেউ এর চূড়ায় আরোহণ করার চেষ্টা করেছে, তখনই তাকে সম্মুখীন হতে হয়েছে প্রাকৃতিক বিপর্যয়ের।
চূড়ায় আরোহণের সময় আরোহীদের শরীরের অঙ্গ-প্রত্যঙ্গ কাজ করা বন্ধ করে দেয়।এমনকি দ্রুতগতিতে মাথার চুল ও হাতের নখ বাড়তে থাকে। এমনসব ভয়ংকর ঘটনা ও প্রাকৃতিক বিরূপ প্রতিক্রিয়ার কারনে হয়তো আজও জয় করা সম্ভব হয়নি কৈলাস শৃঙ্গ।
