Stem Cells: Progress and Promise

Описание к видео Stem Cells: Progress and Promise

In 2006, Shinya Yamanaka made a major medical breakthrough—he discovered how to reprogram ordinary adult skin cells into cells that are capable of developing into any cell in the human body, similar to embryonic stem cells. The discovery of these induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) opened up new opportunities to treat diseases ranging from heart failure to Alzheimer’s to immune disorders.

Yamanaka, along with two leading scientists in the field, Steve Finkbeiner and Kathryn Ivey, discussed what has been accomplished with iPSCs over the past decade, and what they see for the future of this technology.
