Gameplay
The player controls the protagonist, Ethan, from a first-person perspective. As with previous Resident Evil games, the player will have access to a variety of weapons including pistols, shotguns, flamethrowers, explosives and chainsaws in the fight against enemies described as mutant creatures. However, according to developers, players should not expect a "gun fest."

Other notable mechanics of previous Resident Evil games, including puzzle-solving, resource management, and healing herbs are also confirmed to appear in the game. Quick time events, on the other hand, will be entirely absent. The PlayStation 4 version of the game is also playable from start to finish in VR using the PlayStation VR headset, but the core gameplay mechanics will remain identical between both modes.

Story
The game is set in 2017, approximately 4 years after the events of Resident Evil 6 in the fictional city of Dulvey, Louisiana. It features a new protagonist named Ethan Winters, a civilian who offers fewer combat skills than most previous Resident Evil protagonists. Ethan is searching for his missing wife, Mia, which leads him to a derelict plantation mansion, home of the Baker family.

The game starts with a series of video's from Ethan Winters' late wife Mia. The videos range from pleasant exchanges turning toward dark sinister warnings. The final video, reveals that Mia is in fact very much alive and was presumed dead three years ago. Mia actively pleads with her husband that she is sorry for her lies and that he must "stay away". Ethan, naturally ignores the warning and travels to Louisiana. This eventually leads him to the heart of the backwater of Louisiana to a large planation owned by the mysterious Baker family.
