The renewal of the Israeli Palestinian conflict is a worrying sign for a region that was seen as cooling off. Decades old tensions are flaring back up in the worst violence seen since the 2000 to 2005 Intifada. Outside of the active conflict zone, riots and civil unrest between Israel’s Jewish and Arab populations plague the streets.

At the heart of the conflict lies religious and ethnic strife centuries in the making. Jerusalem is a holy city for the three major Abrahamic religions and is divided up along religious and ethnic lines.

More recently, property disputes over several houses near Jerusalem, the Israeli government limiting numbers allowed at the Dome of the Rock during Ramadan, and the current political climate have compounded into a new conflict.
