Biography of Paramahansa Yogananda We are honored to present the life story of one of the greatest spiritual leaders of the 20th century, Paramahansa Yogananda. He was born on January 5, 1893, in Gorakhpur, India. His childhood name was Mukunda Lal Ghosh. Early Life Paramahansa Yogananda was born in a devout Hindu family. His parents, Bhagabati Charan Ghosh and Gyana Prabha Ghosh, were disciples of Lahiri Mahasaya, a great yogi and disciple of Babaji. His parents taught him about the importance of spirituality and introduced him to the teachings of various saints and yogis. Education Paramahansa Yogananda was an exceptional student from a young age. He attended the Scottish Church College in Calcutta and graduated with a degree in mathematics in 1915. He then joined the University of Calcutta to pursue a degree in philosophy. Meeting his Guru In 1910, at the age of 17, Paramahansa Yogananda met his guru, Swami Sri Yukteswar Giri, who would later become a major influence in his life. Swami Sri Yukteswar Giri was a disciple of Lahiri Mahasaya and was known for his spiritual wisdom and knowledge of the scriptures. Paramahansa Yogananda spent many years with his guru, learning about the path of Kriya Yoga and spiritual enlightenment. Journey to America In 1920, at the age of 27, Paramahansa Yogananda traveled to America to attend the International Congress of Religious Liberals in Boston. He was invited to speak at the congress and impressed the attendees with his spiritual knowledge and eloquence. Paramahansa Yogananda decided to stay in America and established the Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF) in 1920 to spread the teachings of Kriya Yoga and spiritual enlightenment in the West. Teachings and Writings Paramahansa Yogananda is best known for his book "Autobiography of a Yogi," which has been translated into over 50 languages and has sold millions of copies worldwide. The book chronicles his spiritual journey and introduces readers to the teachings of Kriya Yoga and the great saints and yogis of India. Paramahansa Yogananda also wrote many other books, including "Whispers from Eternity," "The Science of Religion," and "Man's Eternal Quest." He gave lectures and taught courses on spiritual topics throughout the United States and Europe, attracting thousands of followers. Final Years Paramahansa Yogananda spent the last years of his life in California, where he established the headquarters of the Self-Realization Fellowship in Los Angeles. He continued to write and give lectures on spiritual topics until his passing on March 7, 1952.
