वो रानी थी। पर कुछ ही दिनों में राजा को महल में एक नई रानी की दरकार हुई। रानी खुद ही महल से बाहर चली जाती तो आसानी होती पर ऐसा हुआ नहीं। तब राजा ने शतरंज की बिसात बिछाई। सिपहसालार जमा किए। राजा महल में लाना चाहता था – नई रानी। इसलिए जो रानी मौजूद थी, उस पर लगाए जाने लगे आरोप – महल पर कब्जे, बदमिजाजी और संस्कार विहीन होने के! रानी तब भी बहुत दिनों तक डटी रही। कोई जान न पाया राजा महल में किन सुरंगों को खुदवा रहा था। रानी चुप रही। बड़ी दीवारों ने सोख लीं सिसकियां। दीवारों को आदत थी। उधर पिछले दरवाजे से नई रानी आ भी गई।

बाहर की दुनिया जान न पाई – नई रानी के लिए पुरानी रानी को दीवार में चिनवाना कब हुआ और कैसे हुआ।

दीवार में चिनवा दी गई उसी रानी की है यह – कहानी। जमाने गुजर जाएंगें पर रानी की इस चीख को आप भूल न पाएंगें क्योंकि सच को जानती हैं – रानियां। सिर्फ रानियां।
Vartika Nanda’s book Raniyan Sab Janti Hain is a collection of poems on victims and survivors of various crimes. This book deals with the culture of silence and sets mood for gender discourse. It was listed amongst the TOP 5 books in the year 2015 by Femina.

2015: This book was released during the International Book Fair at Lal Chowk Theatre, Pragati Maidan on 21st February, 2015. The panelists of the programme included Tejender Luthra (IPS), Laxmi Shankar Vajpayee, Shobha Vijender, Anuradha Prasad, Rashmi Singh (IAS) and Richa Anirudh.
2015: Raniyan Sab Janti Hain also resulted in the production of a thematic representation of violence against women ‘Sshhh…..’. A unique initiative which aimed to challenge the perception that domestic violence is limited to the lower strata of the society and raise the question whether the society and the system truly support women in breaking the silence, through a dramatic dialogue of dance, music and theatre with soaring live vocals and percussion. This was done in coordination with Arunima Kumar, a noted Kuchipudi dancer from UK. (This programme was organized for a special audience at CSOI, Chanakya Puri, New Delhi.)

Background: Vartika Nanda is an academic by profession, a journalist by vocation and a prison reformer by passion. She has used the best practices of journalism and academia for studying and contributing to prison reforms. As the founder of Tinka Tinka Foundation, she has tirelessly worked for improving the conditions in India’s prisons, such as including the introduction of prison radio in District Jail, Agra, District Jail, Dehradun and the jails of Haryana. She has authored three books on prisons. Her Tinka Tinka Jail Radio Podcasts are exclusive podcasts dedicated to Indian prisons. She has done major projects with Tihar (Delhi), District Jail of Ghaziabad and Agra (Uttar Pradesh), jails of Madhya Pradesh and jails of Haryana. Her research on the “Study of the condition of women inmates and their children in Indian Prisons and their communication needs with special reference to Uttar Pradesh” has been evaluated as ‘outstanding’ by ICSSR in 2021. Her name has appeared in the Limca Book of Records twice, for her unique contribution to prison reforms. Her work was also taken due cognizance by the Supreme Court of India in 2018.

Vartika Nanda was conferred with the Stree Shakti Puraskar by the President of India in 2014 for her seminal contribution to women empowerment through media and literature. She is called the VOICE OF DELHI POLICE for being the official storyteller for Delhi Police for the podcast series- Kissa Khaki Ka, the only podcast series by any police department in India.
Currently, she heads the Department of Journalism, Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi University.
