Colleen Newell of The Inbtwn Studios transformed the multitalented actor’s apartment in a former church into a place he could find calm.

"From the beginning, the design was shaped not just by Shannon’s personal aesthetic, but by his family history. His grandmother had amassed a rich collection of antique rugs and objects from around the world during a stint living in Turkey. Newell, whose own design background includes a decade with ABC Carpet & Home and global textile sourcing, immediately recognized the significance. “When I saw these rugs, I geeked out,” she recalls. “They weren’t just beautiful - they were part of his story.”

Layered Persian Mahal and Afghan Tekke rugs became a foundational element of the space, grounding a sitting area where a vintage Percival Lafer leather sofa with a near-perfect patina offers a place to sink in.”

In the living room Colleen used a design technique called layering rugs. This styling method adds depth, texture, and soul to a space. It instantly anchors a room and tell a richer visual story.

🧡 It’s about creating atmosphere. Layered rugs soften acoustics, warm up cold floors, and introduce a curated, lived-in charm.

🎨 Think of it like art underfoot: pairing patterns and textures lets you play with contrast, scale, and tone - without overwhelming the room.

🌿 From flatweaves over jute to antique Persian atop sisal, layering is how designers bring nuance and narrative into a space. It’s not a trend - it’s a timeless technique.
