Описание к видео 10 Atlantic Walrus Facts

With tusks like theirs, it is easy to see why walruses are some of the most recognizable animals on the planet. They’re also among our favorite Arctic residents, populating the beaches of Spitsbergen and Greenland with their sizable, sleepy herds.

Here are ten facts about the walrus (specifically the Atlantic walrus, which we see on our trips) taken from our website and combined with colorful clips of these beloved creatures.

Included in this video are the following walrus facts:

1. Walruses like to assemble into herds. They are very social, typically found in large shoreline herds or living together on moving pack ice.
2. Male walruses can reach 3 – 3.5 meters long (9.84 – 11.48 feet) and weigh up to1,200 kg (2,645 pounds), while females usually grow to 2.5 meters long (8.2 feet) and weigh around 900 kg (1,984 pounds).
3. Male walruses rarely live beyond 15 years in the wild, due the dangers and rigors of maintaining a harem. Female walruses, however, may live up to 25 or 30 years.
4. Walrus forelimbs and hindlimbs are sleek and webbed like oars, enabling them to swim up to 35 kph (22 mph) when necessary.
5. Walruses can dive to 80 – 90 meters (260 – 300 feet) and stay underwater from 10 – 30 minutes, though they usually take briefer and shallower dives.
6. Using their sensitive whiskers to find food, walruses forage at the bottom of the sea at depths up to 80 meters (262 feet), but most of their feeding occurs around 10 – 50 meters (33 – 164 feet).
7. Young walrus calves drink their mother’s low-fat milk for about two years, though they may remain with her until the age of four.
8. A walrus bellow can be heard over 1.5 km (.7 miles) away and has been said to scare away even orca whales, which walruses can contend with in the water.
9. Walruses are circumpolar marine animals whose habitat includes Arctic and sub-Arctic areas, and they prefer shallow water with depths around 80 meters (262 feet) or less that has a bottom substrate rich in bivalves (a class of mollusk).
10. There are an estimated 200,000 – 225,000 walruses alive today. The species has been protected since 1952.
