Chapters, they are sections of books, periods of time, or episodes in one's life. For me, these chapters are based on the catalog of songs I've written in the order they've been conceived. They are demos, alternative versions, or new songs i haven't had the chance to release. Each will have a story. The images are all from the town where i grew up. The streets where i lived, the neighborhoods i dwelled, the beach I would get away to, the sidewalks I biked on.
It's the story of me.

'Labels of Blues' I remember the day pretty vividly, I sat with my friend Brian Sapp and said he was working with this chord progression. Real simple 4 chord Gm in Blues. It felt so familiar to me though. Maybe that’s why Blues is the Blues because it feels familiar. But I took that baton and ran with it. The melody was spinning with this idea of me sitting at a bar having a conversation with the bar tender. Figuring out what drink while mulling over this situation I'm confronted with. The Bartender is asking me what kind of blues kinda funk am I in. If it's the kind of blues that a beer could cure, calling Skyy Vodka to the case, maybe a Jack Daniels evening. And of course, was it dire enough situation for Johnny Walker. And if so, which label would be the right antidote.

I felt like the song kind of wrote itself. One of the most fun i've had writing for sure. When I used to perform it live I was able to tie in a little Ray Charles. Hit the road jack. The melody fits so well and even with the name Jack. That wasn’t intentional on my end but man when I figured it out that was a cool easter egg. “Hit the road jack, and don’t ya come back no more no more, hit the road jack, and don’t ya come back a no more…What’d you SAY! How do you do…How do you do…”

This version is a demo I cut probably more than 20 years ago. At Valley Center studios with a guy name Siavash. He was great. I rehearsed there for years and he was always willing to work things out for me being fresh out of the car. I sat down and ran through about 13 songs in a row. Not really stopping just getting them all down as time was money. This was a one take. Which im kind of impressed with to be honest listening back on it. Jason Schweitz, who has been mixing some of these chapters tracks, was going to just mix some trumpet in there on top with a few versions I had. Last minute he decided to give his own take to it w a tenor sax. I think he heard what I was hearing because it adds a different sexier vibe to the song than the original. Really fun to find this version and add some old spice to it.

Image: Woodlands Park. Just off of St. Andrews. One of my favorite places. Those courts saw a lot of traction. It was a place I could get away as a kid and young adult. Thursday and Sunday night games were packed. Good competition for an uppity town. I came here to think. I came here to play. And sometimes I came here to reminisce. Rims have decent give. Nets are always up. From 2v2s. To full court packed. Spring break one offs. Or just riding your bikes around and around on a slow December night.
