Описание к видео Barclay Deconstruction Project

In June 2010 a large 3-story brick rowhouse at 2104 N. Calvert St was razed. But this was not your typical demolition project. Instead it was a demonstration of using hybrid deconstruction techniques, a method of razing buildings that combines using heavy equipment with manual labor. One benefit of this technique is that more building material can be salvaged. In fact in this project 95% (by weight) of the building material was diverted from the landfill and was either reused or recycled, a level that meets LEED Platinum requirements.

Beth Strommen, Director of the Baltimore Office of Sustainability (BOS), working with Lowell Larsson, Barclay Deconstruction Project Manager developed a program to train nine Baltimore City men in the hybrid deconstruction technique. BOS worked closely with Telesis which, in conjunction with HABC, is redeveloping about 325 housing units in the Barclay and East Baltimore/Midway neighborhoods. The Calvert St. rowhouse was razed as part of the first phase of this redevelopment effort. BOS applied for and received an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) grant which was combined with a grant from the Annie E. Casey Foundation secured by John Friedel of Safe and Sound who was the fiscal agent for the project.

In addition to diverting material from the landfill this project also had a strong social component. The nine men who were trained were part of Jericho Re-entry, a program of the Episcopal Community Services of Maryland that works with formerly incarcerated men and prepares them for re-entry to the workforce. They were managed on-site by Lenzie Johnson the principal of L&J Construction Service, Inc. a Barclay-based Minority Business Enterprise. Mr. Johnson was really impressed with the work ethic and the attitude of the men he trained and had this comment. "This project shows that local businesses hiring local people can make Baltimore City stronger by following the dictum: reduce, reuse, recycle. We can add to that, and support re-entry."
