Zuri, a Prague-based aviation startup, is ending the year on a high note with groundbreaking news in the aerospace industry. The company has secured a significant financial boost, which will accelerate the development of its next-generation hybrid VTOL aircraft, the TD 2.0. With this new investment, Zuri is poised to take the next step in revolutionizing advanced air mobility and hybrid aviation technology.

Founded in 2017, Zuri has been at the forefront of innovation, envisioning a hybrid version of the increasingly popular eVTOL aircraft. While most eVTOL manufacturers focus on electric powertrains, Zuri has chosen a different path, believing that hybrid powertrains offer a more viable solution for today’s air mobility challenges. Zuri argues that current battery technology is far from being able to provide the necessary range and power for eVTOLs in the foreseeable future, especially over the next 50 years. In contrast, hybrid VTOLs like Zuri’s offer a more sustainable and immediate solution, using a combination of hybrid engines and Sustainable Aviation Fuel, which results in lower emissions than purely electric eVTOLs.

Zuri’s hybrid aircraft also features smaller batteries, making it more efficient. By incorporating SAF into its propulsion system, Zuri's aircraft can fly longer distances and produce less CO2 compared to electric aircraft that rely on grid power. After the successful testing of its first-generation demonstrator, Zuri is now set to build the TD 2.0, an optimized version of their hybrid VTOL. The new design incorporates advanced tiltrotors, a re-engineered tail section, and an improved hybrid propulsion system, capable of operating in all four flight modes: vertical take-off, vertical landing, transition, and cruise.

The TD 2.0 will be able to carry four passengers and a pilot, and it promises an impressive range of up to 900 kilometers, even with a 30-minute reserve. This expanded range makes the hybrid VTOL a serious contender in AAM, as it can cover long-distance routes more efficiently than other electric aircraft.

In addition to the enhanced range, Zuri’s aircraft will integrate advanced technologies, including AI-powered object recognition and autopilot systems that use data from various sources to ensure a safe and smooth flight. With a financial boost of €4.4 million ($4.6 million) from an oversubscribed pre-series A funding round, Zuri is now in a position to finalize the TD 2.0 prototype and move closer to commercial testing.
