Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised the issue of cross-border terrorism in his bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping earlier today, Foreign secretary Vikram Misri said on Sunday.

PM Modi underlined the fact that cross-border terrorism impacts both India and China and that it is important for the two countries to support each other in combating the issue, Misri said during a special briefing.

On the sidelines of the SCO Summit in Tianjin, Chinese President Xi Jinping struck a conciliatory note, stressing that India and China must “come together” and “be friends.” His bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi was framed as an attempt to reset fraught relations between the two Asian giants.

What’s pulling New Delhi closer to Beijing remains hotly debated. Some point to Donald Trump’s erratic foreign policy, others to India’s economic compulsions, while many insist that the unresolved border remains the central fault line and the primary driver of engagement with China.

Adding to the drama, a New York Times investigation, echoing German media reports, claimed Trump tried to reach out to Modi in recent weeks to salvage a partial trade deal. The Indian side, wary of Trump’s penchant for exaggeration, reportedly stayed away. While the White House has denied this, the episode underscores the widening trust gap between the oldest & the largest democracies in the world,

Now, with Trump upending the global chessboard and Modi sharing the summit stage with Xi Jinping, Vladimir Putin, and Pakistan’s Shehbaz Sharif, the question looms large: which path will India choose in this shifting world order?
