If you're thinking about applying for Social Security retirement benefits, this video can help you get started.

You have three options: by phone, at your local Social Security office, or conveniently online. If you choose the online option, you'll need to have a My Social Security account set up on ssa.gov. Whichever method you choose, you'll need to provide information such as your date and place of birth, along with your Social Security number. Details about your marital history, children, work history, and earnings will also be required.

For veterans, remember to have your dates of service and service papers ready, as special earnings credits may apply.

Make sure you have your bank account and routing numbers for setting up direct deposit, as Social Security payments must be received electronically.

You can apply for retirement benefits up to four months before you plan to start collecting, and the same process applies for spousal benefits.
