Building Heroes is a brilliant UK charity dedicated to transforming the lives of ex-service men and women by helping them retrain and build new careers in construction. These are people who’ve served their country, shown discipline and courage, and are now navigating one of life’s biggest transitions — finding purpose and stability after the Armed Forces. Building Heroes gives them the skills, confidence, and employment pathways to succeed in civilian life.

So when I was invited to be their event host, entertainer, and charity auctioneer for their latest fundraiser, I knew the night needed to be something extraordinary.

From the outset, the atmosphere was polite — respectful, even. But every charity auctioneer knows that polite applause doesn’t pay for scholarships or training programmes. You have to build momentum. You have to find the rhythm of the room and light it up.

Through a mix of humour, storytelling, and sheer energy, we turned quiet tables into competitive bidding wars. People who swore they wouldn’t buy anything ended up fighting over signed memorabilia, weekend getaways, and once-in-a-lifetime experiences. By the end of the evening, the room wasn’t just generous — it was alive.

When Nicola, Building Heroes’ Deputy Chief Executive, came up afterwards and shared how thrilled she was — describing how the night went from hesitant to electric — it was one of those affirming moments that every charity auctioneer cherishes.

For me, every event is a new challenge — a new opportunity to blend entertainment with empathy. Whether it’s a black-tie gala or a golf day fundraiser, my mission as a charity auctioneer is to ensure that guests don’t just attend an event… they feel it.
