I want to clear up a few things about busking and myself.

1) Street playing is not all fun and games and dancing kids. I've been doing this for 10 years. I regularly face not only verbal abuse, but physical assault as I work a few blocks from the downtown eastside, Vancouver, Canada. I'm surrounded by addicts, drunks, and people who should be in mental homes.
2) I'm unemployed. All live clubs I used to play have been shut down over the last ten years. I lost all work. In April 2021, I had a major aneurysm and almost died. I’m now on the comeback trail.

5) I get asked this 100 times a day so here's the answer: I play on the street and not in a band because all the clubs closed years ago. I used to lead many bands from 2006 to 2018. That's all gone. Live music is dead in Vancouver. It's also a lot more hassle, and less money, to run a band than play by myself.
6) The number one comment I get is “I don’t understand how people can walk past without stopping.” Here are the top 10 reasons people ignore me.

1) Most people are so self-centred these days they get offended by someone else’s talent. I actually get verbally abused while playing, told to shut up, fuc off, even while playing quietly.
2) People have no concept of what a musician is any more and the years of work it takes to be one.
3) Guitar disappeared from radio and songs so they have no concept of what guitar is.
4) Guitar solos are completely out of fashion for the last 20 years and mean nothing to mostly everyone under the age of 50. It’s dinosaur music played on a dinosaur instrument.
5) Music is an over abundant commodity that is now mostly free and has no value.
6) Context. I’m seen by most people as a homeless beggar/bum so they see no value in what I’m doing, and are in fact actively trying to avoid me. Nothing scares people more than being near what they see as a ‘poor street person’.
7) Stopping or appreciating means being forced to think about leaving a tip, which makes most people uncomfortable.
8) I’m not a cute 10-year-old. I’ve seen talentless busking kids. They make way more money because they’re cute. No one gives a shit about an old man, no matter how good he is.
9) It’s an arts hating city full of apathetic zombies. Vancouver is infamous for being the most antisocial shithole in Canada, if not the world.
10) Worst audience I’ve ever seen, and I’ve played everywhere. Europe, Turkey, Greece, Outer Mongolia. Full of condo flipping foreign investment aholes that will bury a historic music venue if it makes them a buck.

Aug 7, 2016. Even Olivia Newton John says this solo is totally hot. It's so hot, my pants have called for an arson investigation. It's so hot, some homeless people fried bacon on the sidewalk in front of my amplifier, and I used the grease on my guitar neck. Billy Gibbons heard this and his beard caught fire. I wear sunglasses because looking at my fingers while playing will cause blindness more severe than staring into a total eclipse.
